Five Elements of Feng Shui Bring Balance And Harmony

The five elements of feng shui work together to bring balance and harmony to your environment, whether it is your home, office or other area.

The key is balancing the 5 elements so that they work together and establish a harmonizing, even flow of Qi throughout the space. Each of the elements has its own characteristics and fits in with the other elements in such a way that it is like a big puzzle. Each element has a role to play in balancing the Qi that is within the environment.

The Role Of The Five Elements

Five Elements

Wood

Wood is one of the five elements of feng shui that evolves from yin and yang. This symbolizes the joining of male and female energies and represents all living plants and trees. The wealth and prosperity areas of your home, garden and office are associated with wood.

Placing wooden items in the wealth and prosperity as well as the health areas of your home and combining it with some energizing plants will increase your wealth and prosperity. You can also place wooden benches in your garden and yard to boost the wealth area there as well. The color that is associated with wood is green.

Fire

Another of the five elements of feng shui is fire. A yang energy, fire is a south element, meaning that the southern area of your room, office or home should contain red objects which encourage the positive yang energy.

Candles and bright lights will also increase the energy of fire as will green objects which are wood. Wood fuels fire. The color that is associated with fire is red.

Earth

The energy of earth is nurturing and grounding, inducing togetherness and closeness. Furnishings that are earth will improve the areas of family, marital and relationships because it is warm and soothing.

Additionally it stimulates learning and knowledge. When placing earth furnishing in your home, the southwest area is for marriage and relationships while the northeast is for knowledge and education. You can enhance earth areas with terra cotta items, crystals, earthenware and ceramic bowls. The colors associated with earth are brown and yellow.

Metal

Metal is a yang element, a positive force that is often used to deflect or suppress illness, setbacks and other negative earth energy. Children, mentors and networking all benefit from its energy.

Chimes is a popular metal element that is often used to balance out the flow of Qi, especially if one area has too much yin. It also helps to "create" water. The colors that are associated with metal are white, silver and gold.

Water

Water is a crucial element because it constantly moves, carries and accumulates Qi through the environment. Flowing water is very relaxing and soothes the spirit which makes it very good for energizing certain areas of your home and your life.

You can place a water feature in the north to help you with your career goals. It also symbolizes wealth and prosperity so you may also place a fountain or aquarium in the wealth area, but never place water in the bedroom.

One note, the bathroom is a place where water is drained away which can be counterproductive since water is linked to wealth. This area can become stagnant. You should always keep the toilet seat cover down. The colors that are associated with water are black or blue.

Using the five elements of feng shui can bring harmony and peace to your environment. The are governed by the destructive cycle and the productive cycle so that water produces wood which produces fire which produces earth which produces metal which produces water. It is a continuous cycle as are all cycles in nature, benefiting from each other and flowing harmoniously with each other.
